What is nitro cold brew?
Nitro cold brew coffee is cold brew infused with nitrogen. Cold brew is made by steeping coffee grounds in cold water for 12 to 24 hours (we like 24). After the coffee is filtered, it’s infused with nitrogen.
Why is nitro cold brew better than iced coffee?
Unlike iced coffee, which is brewed hot in minutes, cooled and poured over ice, cold brew is brewed in cold water for a long period of time. It’s a slow extraction. The cold brew process yields a smoother mouthfeel, much less acid and extra punch of caffeine. Acid mutes coffee flavor, and since cold brew has around 70% less acid than hot coffee, you experience much deeper, complex and nuanced flavor than you can get with iced coffee.
Why Add the Nitrogen to Cold Brew?
Infusing cold brew with nitrogen does two things. First, it adds a frothy, creamy texture, without any cream, calories or additives. Right away, this opens a creamy, latte-like coffee beverage up to many people who have dietary restrictions.
The second reason is a bit more scientific. The nitrogen floats the coffee across your entire palate, which has different flavor receptors in different areas of the mouth, so that you can experience all of the flavor the coffee has to offer, instead of having a rather narrow and muted coffee experience.
Now if your bean quality is unimpressive and your roasted coffee is already narrow and dull, then the scientific benefit of nitro cold brew isn’t going to make the flavor experience any better. It won’t create complexity, balance and smoothness out of thin air. BUT, if you’re using unimpeachable bean quality and roasting it in a manner that achieves massive diversity of flavor all in perfect balance with each other, then nitro cold brew is a golden opportunity to raise the coffee experience to new heights. Spoiler alert: that’s what King’s Row Coffee does to their nitro cold brew.
Why is King’s Brew better than other nitro cold brew?
· It's Fresher: Our nitro cold brew is so fresh that it has an aroma when you crack the can open. Unlike shelf-stable cold brews that sit around forever and were roasted who-knows-how-long-ago, our nitro cold brew is roasted days before it’s brewed. It’s not made shelf-stable because that ruins the flavor we worked so hard to achieve. That’s also why you see a “ best by” date on it. That’s not an expiration date, but an indication of peak flavor. If you see it on the shelf, it’s not fresh and it’s probably not good quality. If you see a brand in the cold section, check the brew date. We guarantee it’s not as fresh as our nitro cold brew.
· It's Higher Quality: we pay small family farms directly, a premium of 35 to 100% greater than Fair Trade rates based on bean quality, which is cupped at the grower level. Not only does this guarantee us preferential access to the world’s best beans, but it also gives the farmers the mean to treat the workers fairly, the land fairly and continually grow incredible, shade-grown Arabica beans.
· It's Tastier: speaking of peak flavor, our nitro cold brew has been tested by a certified Food Safety Lab to maintain peak flavor for 120 days from brew date. This 4X longer than other cold brews and nitro cold brews, which typically and rapidly deteriorate after 30 days. This is a direct reflection of the unparalleled bean quality and a meticulous, proprietary roasting assemblage method that maximizes flavor in the cold brew process. This process is the same process we apply to all of our coffee blends, and it was developed over 30 years by a James Beard award winning Best Chef and palate-scientist. Quality will only get you so far, how you prepare the coffee matters much much more, and our preparation method is one-of-a-kind.
· Its Healthier: While you may think there’s sugar and cream in our cold brew, it’s just black coffee and purified water. 0 calories, dairy-free, no additives, low acid, gluten-free, the list goes on.
If you’re new to King’s Row Coffee, you’ll be very happy to learn that our unparalleled bean quality (the world’s best beans, literally) and proprietary wine-inspired roasting and blending method (developed by our James Beard award winning best chef) yield a complexity of flavor, balance and smoothness that is unachievable in single origins and traditional blends. Just ask the experts:
"I was blown away." - Wine Spectator
"A different approach to an extremely good cup of coffee." - Food & Wine Magazine
"The smoothest, most complex coffees on the market." - Inc Magazine
That incredible diversity of flavor, balance and finish in our coffee shines through in the nitro cold brew, since it’s less acidic and our palate isn’t so muted, and the nitrogen coats the whole palate resulting in a symphony of flavor in your mouth that is truly exceptional. It’s truly one of a kind and the best nitro cold brew you’ve ever tasted.
You may have tried nitro cold brew before at Starbucks or elsewhere. But we guarantee you haven’t had nitro cold brew like ours. It’s the best nitro cold brew you’ve ever tasted (sorry Starbucks) and it’s a result of incredible expertise, unparalleled quality and a proprietary process that unlocks the full flavor potential of coffee.
Unlike most other ready-to-drink coffees, who buy their beans from a roaster, we are involved at every level, from the farm farm to your taste buds. We pay small family farms directly, 35 to 100% greater than Fair Trade rates, based on the quality of the bean which we cup at the grower level. The beans are carefully handpicked for specific characteristics we want in the finish blend. Each varietal is roasted individually to a custom temperature and time interval to achieve a very specific flavor we want in the finished blend. The roasted single origins are then combined in a very specific formula based on the profile we want.
What makes King’s Row stand out from the crowded space of craft coffee roasters is that we’re the only roaster that looks beyond bean quality, and thinks about how the external circumstances affect the flavor experience. Where is the coffee being consumed? How is it being brewed? Where is it being brewed? Our mission is to fuel your best day, wherever it takes you, and people drink coffee in very different settings and need-states that affect coffee flavor and require and individualized look at that setting to make sure we optimize the blend to be perfectly tailored to your lifestyle.
The nitro cold brew process demands this individualized look. It’s an entirely different process from a hot coffee extraction and impacts the finished flavor profile in an entirely different way. A 12 to 24 hour extraction of a coffee will yield a dissimilar flavor profile than a hot water extraction of that same coffee. The golden question is, how does the cold brew process affect flavor and what can we do to optimize flavor for that process? We’ve answered that question and crafted a nitro cold brew blend based on that answer.
Rather than use one of our existing blends that shine in hot coffee extraction methods, we took it upon ourselves to master a blend that would extract flawless in the cold brew process. In that regard, we stand alone and the proof is in the pudding - once you taste our nitro cold brew side-by-side with other options out there, you will see for yourself.
Why a can?
· It’s Tastier: We tested every bottle out there up against an aluminum can and found that it held flavor better
· The Nitrogen Effect: The coolest part of nitro cold brew is the creamy, boyant and frothy head that the nitrogen adds to the cold brew. The can far and away provided a bigger head than a bottle, which was extremely flat.
· Convenience and Versatility: Normally, convenient coffee options like K cups come at the detriment of quality and flavor. Our nitro cold brew is convenience, quality/flavor and on-trend all in-one. Beyond being able to take our nitro cold brew anywhere to fuel your best day, it satisfies so many need states and is extremely versatile. Have it first thing in the morning when you wake up and save the time of having to brew your coffee. Say goodbye to the time-consuming, messy and unsatisfying office coffee options and keep your King’s Brew in the fridge for those much needed coffee break that you earned. Bring it on every adventure you set out on - it’s always ready and always delicious. Make a delicious affogato with vanilla ice cream. And perhaps our favorite need-state, is happy hour. Nitro cold brew is a fantastic mixer. Here are some recipes but hands down our favorite is the Kahlua Nitro Float:

How much caffeine is in your nitro cold brew?
300 mg on the dot. Our nitro cold brew has roughly 2 tems the caffeine content of a regular cup of coffee and it won’t drive you off the walls then make you crash, like a red bull. It’s productive, buzzing energy to fuel your best day!
How should your nitro cold brew be kept and served?
It’s a cold, fresh product, so it needs to be refrigerated. It will keep peak flavor in your fridge for 120 days past brew date, and that best-by date is printed on the bottom of the can. we recommend a fridge temperature of 24 to 38 degrees. Above 40 is too warm in our opinion. An added benefit of keeping it cold is that the nitrogen is better the colder the can is.
When you’re ready enjoy your nitro cold brew, simply shake well and pour hard. 5 good shakes should do the trick and pour upside down in a glass for a beautiful, cascading nitrogen head. You can also drink it straight out of the can for less frothy and equally delicious coffee experience. No bitterness - just velvety smooth caffeinated perfection.
Now you know everything about nitro cold brew and why King’s Brew is the best nitro cold brew there is. Only one thing left to do….get yours and fuel your best day, wherever it takes you...
